Portiuncula University Hospital Anaesthesia and ICU Team Streamlines Protocol Access with Eolas Medical

The Anaesthesia and ICU team at Portiuncula University Hospital adopted Eolas Medical to replace fragmented paper-based protocols and eliminate time-consuming searches for guidelines, drug doses, and key phone contacts.

Background

Portiuncula University Hospital serves its community with a range of acute services including anaesthesia and intensive care. The department supports clinicians who must make rapid, high-stakes decisions — often in time-critical scenarios such as massive haemorrhage — where immediate access to protocols and drug dosing information is essential.

Challenges Before Eolas

Before Eolas ("o-las"), the team faced multiple challenges including searching for printed or outdated protocols, uncertainty about which guidelines were current, and wasted time calling to find protocols or identify the right person to consult. These issues were particularly acute for clinicians new to the Irish healthcare system who were unfamiliar with local workflows and contact details.

Implementation

The team is still in the process of onboarding and consolidating content within Eolas. While the platform itself has proven user-friendly with great potential, one of the main challenges has been identifying and sourcing all relevant protocols for inclusion. That said, the process has sparked helpful conversations within the team about standardising care pathways and making information more accessible.

Key Outcomes

Even at this early stage, Eolas has already demonstrated clear value. The platform reduces time spent searching for information and supports quicker decision-making. In cases of massive blood loss, the team can rapidly access the massive transfusion protocol through the app, ensuring timely and appropriate management without delays. Importantly, phone extension numbers are included directly within the protocol, eliminating the need to search separately for who to call. The app has contributed to more consistent care by improving access to protocols and drug doses, helping reduce delays and variability, especially in urgent situations. Staff report less confusion and less time spent searching for guidelines, with Eolas providing a single platform to refer to.

Testimonial

"A great starting point for organising reference materials and protocols in one convenient location. It's a straightforward and accessible tool that's very useful for healthcare professionals."
