The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) is the primary public healthcare provider in the Cayman Islands, operating the main hospital and a network of clinics across the territory. The Pharmacy and Physician Services teams serve a diverse patient population and rely on access to up-to-date clinical guidelines, including UK Overseas Territories-specific protocols, to ensure safe and effective care.
Before Eolas Medical, clinical guidelines were difficult to locate on the hospital website and were inaccessible when staff were working away from the main hospital campus. This created barriers to timely, evidence-based decision-making — particularly for prescribing and antimicrobial stewardship, where quick access to dosage guidelines is essential.
Physician adoption was initially slow, and some staff encountered difficulties signing up and locating the UK Overseas Territories guidelines within the platform. The team addressed this through one-on-one assistance when requested, and noted that a video tutorial would be helpful for future onboarding. Despite these early challenges, the platform’s value became evident through active engagement from intern physicians in particular.
The most notable impact has been on antimicrobial stewardship. Intern physicians have become active users of the platform and have commented that it has improved their antimicrobial prescribing practices. The ability to update guidelines and have changes immediately accessible to end users has been a significant advantage, removing the delays previously associated with publishing updates through the hospital website.
The team has also valued the ability to access guidelines and workspaces from other organisations and institutions — a feature that supports cross-institutional learning and helps a relatively small healthcare system benchmark its practices against larger organisations.
“Eolas has been helpful in my clinical practice. The app allows us to easily update guidelines and have the update immediately accessible to the end users. I have personally enjoyed being able to access guidelines and workspaces from other organisations and institutions.”
